Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive treatment for rejuvenating skin tone and texture. It can help with skin-related issues such as sun damage, fine lines, age spots, wrinkles, melasma, and acne scars. This treatment involves the use of a unique applicator with an abrasive surface to carefully abrade the hard outer layer of the skin for rejuvenation purposes.

Another microdermabrasion method involves spraying fine particles of sodium bicarbonate or aluminum oxide using suction or vacuum to achieve the same result as the abrasive surface. Microdermabrasion is generally safe for most skin types.

    Preparing for microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is nonsurgical and minimally invasive. Patients may need to discuss their skin issues with a dermatologist to know if they are eligible for microdermabrasion. The skincare expert will need to know about any past cosmetic treatments, surgeries, allergies, and existing medical conditions.

Patients may be advised to avoid extended sun exposure, waxing, and tanning lotions for at least a week ahead of treatment. They also need to avoid exfoliating creams and facial masks about three days before the procedure. Before the treatment starts, we will remove every trace of makeup and clean the face thoroughly.

What to expect during a microdermabrasion session

Microdermabrasion typically lasts about an hour. It is handled by a certified skin care professional, sometimes under the supervision of a doctor. Local anesthesia or numbing agents are not necessary for the procedure.

During the procedure, the skincare expert will use a handheld tool to spray the particles gently and abrade the upper layer of the skin in the treatment area. After the treatment, a moisturizer and sunscreen will be applied to the skin.

We may perform the procedure using different techniques, depending on the particular tools used, such as:

    Diamond-tip handpiece

A diamond-tip handpiece is created to carefully exfoliate dead skin cells and concurrently suction them away immediately. The extent of the abrasion may be influenced by the pressure used on the handpiece and the time the suction remains on the skin. This tool is usually used on sensitive facial areas such as the eye area.

    Crystal microdermabrasion

This technique involves the use of a crystal-emitting hand tool to spray fine crystals on the face for gentle skin abrasion. Dead skin cells are immediately removed. The crystal we use may be sodium bicarbonate or aluminum oxide.

    Hydradermabrasion

This technique is relatively new to a microdermabrasion treatment. It involves the combination of a concurrent dermal infusion of substances and crystal-free exfoliation. This procedure triggers the production of collagen and enhances blood flow to the skin.

    Recovery

Since microdermabrasion is minimally invasive, patients can resume their regular activities immediately. The patient must keep the skin hydrated and avoid harsh skin care products. Protection with sunscreen is also a crucial step in preventing damage to your skin because it will be more sensitive in the first few weeks after treatment.

    Final note

The results of microdermabrasion are immediately noticeable. Multiple treatment sessions may be required, depending on the severity of the skin condition and the patient’s expectations. Our skin care professional will create a custom plan for you, including the number of treatment sessions and routine maintenance treatments.
